Pick up Akaroa (departure time flexible, usually 12:15pm to fit the shuttle bus from Christchurch)

Akaroa’s waterfront geology of Akaroa Volcano and Southern Alps, the creation of Te Pātaka o Rakaihautu/Banks Peninsula, Polynesian navigation and settlement, and understanding the natural history of NZ.

Takapūneke – walk the new memorial to understand Maori culture and the Brig Elizabeth Incident which was the first European involvement in intertribal warfare and led to the First British Resident, the Declaration of Independence and ultimately the Treaty of Waitangi.

Onuku – visit the site of the first signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in the South Island and understand how the treaty has remained relevant today.

Britomart Monument – view the site of the first demonstration of British Sovereignty over the South Island in the race for the French who had purchased Banks Peninsula and were arriving to the first planned European Settlement in the South Island.

French Landing – Visit the French town of Akaroa

Heritage Park – stop as we climb our way up the inside of the extinct volcano for a spectacular photo stop & crash course on native plant identification.

Hinewai Reserve – Be inspired by the vision of one man, Hugh Wilson and his life’s work – the largest private native forest restoration reserve in New Zealand where introduced invasive weeds are used to regenerative native forest, with little human intervention.

Ellengowen Reserve – photo stop at the crater rim, be blown away, either by the view or the wind depending on the day! Look out over the Pacific Ocean while looking down upon picturesque Akaroa Harbour at the same time!

On our way home to Akaroa, we learn about the Seventh Generation Principle, caring for the earth for seven generations to come, turangawaewae (knowing where we belong) so we can be better kaitiakitanga (guardians) of the land and the stories, and Manaakitanga (telling those stories well) for seven generations to come, leaving you with a real hope for the future.
